UH campus police caught spying on us

August 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

A public information request we recently filed revealed that the UH campus police have been secretly videotaping us. On July 15 we held a press conference in front of the library on campus. In reply to our request the UH general counsel provided us with a DVD showing that police officers were hiding in bushes and videotaping us. Apparently these low rent Steven Spielberg wannabes could not actually figure out how to record sound so their nine minute video just shows us standing around in front of the library getting ready for our press conference.

Our press conference addressed President Khator’s phony apparel task force “report” and Khator’s press release which ignored its recommendation to join the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC). Several corporate media outlets were in attendance. We also videotaped our press conference and posted it on youtube. See Press conference part 1, Press conference part 2

Maybe these low rent UH goons could just watch our video and learn something about the sweatshop issue.

It’s also important to note that the Khator and her administrators always tell us not to video them mainly because they don’t want a record of their lies and also because they have a bad habit of fabricating false disciplinary charges against us. But Khator has no problem with her junior G-Men clandestinely taping us without our permission.

Daily Cougar puts sweatshops on the front page again!

January 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Daily Cougar published the lead front page article about sweatshops and our goal for the University to sign on to the Worker’s Rights Consortium and the Designated Suppliers Program. You can read it here.

Plus they published a staff editorial in support of our campaign goals. They titled their editorial “UH should sell clothes with a conscience.” Read the article here.

Coincidentally these articles were published the same day as the United Students Against Sweatshops national day of action.  In support of that we delivered an oversize invitation to president Renu Khator to come to the event we’re sponsoring on February 27. It’s a  speech by former sweatshop worker Chie Abad. See the events page for more details.

Student Government passes apparel bill

January 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Student Government Association unanimously passed a bill to affiliate with the Workers Rights Consortium and to sign on to the Designated Supplier Program. These are the goals of our sweat free campus campaign. Our member Tim O’Brien introduced the issue and bill. We hope this will help convince the administration to actually sign on with these programs. Look out our mission statement (under the about link)  for more information about what these programs do. Check out the story in the Daily Cougar here.

We made the front page of the Daily Cougar

January 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Check out the story on their website here.

Or if you want to read it without all the ads here’s the text:

At the latest demonstration on Dec. 6, Students Against Sweatshops President Timothy O’Brien organized a “study-in” in front of UH Interim President John Rudley’s office to raise awareness about working conditions overseas.

UH student organizations Students Against Sweatshops and Students for Fair Trade staged demonstrations throughout the fall semester to raise awareness about the conditions apparel workers experience abroad.

“Anything that raises awareness is effective,” O’Brien said. “If one person reads it, that’s awareness. We try to raise awareness any way we can.”

The main objective for Students Against Sweatshops is to help promote sweat-free apparel, so that workers can produce clothing in a good work environment, O’Brien said.

“‘Sweat-free’ means that the workers are treated fairly,” he said. “The factories across the border – it’s a really toxic atmosphere, and they’re all over the world. Sweat-free items (are) produced in a manner where the workers are protected and treated like human beings with dignity like we want to be treated.”

O’Brien, along with Students for Fair Trade President Ross Barnard, interrupted a Faculty Senate meeting in September after attempts to meet with Rudley failed, O’Brien said.

O’Brien also said Students Against Sweatshops will adopt more confrontational tactics than Students for Fair Trade, but only “if necessary.” He did not specify what sorts of actions the organization would use.

Previous demonstrations that have taken place during the semester included hanging unauthorized banners on campus buildings, of which no one has claimed responsibility.

In early October, a banner posted in front of the M.D. Anderson Library read, “Pres Rudley lies U of H uses sweatshop labor for UH clothes,” The Daily Cougar reported. The banner was taken down because of library policy, which does not allow groups to post material in front of the building. The Daily Cougar also reported that O’Brien said he was not involved, but agreed with the message on the banner.

Another banner was removed from the Welcome Center in November urging Rudley to sign the Designated Suppliers Program – an agreement guaranteeing the ethical treatment of garment workers. The banner was also taken down because of University policy and safety concerns, The Daily Cougar reported. The UH Student Labor Action Program, whose name appeared on the banner, is not registered as a student organization because the students involved did not want disciplinary actions levied against them, The Daily Cougar reported.
